Early Morning at Machu Picchu by RockyMtnMinnie Early Morning at Machu Picchu by RockyMtnMinnie
Photo taken early in the morning at Machu Picchu before the tourist buses and trains show up. I really want something that tells a story. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, the ruins are covered with people so to get a photo you have to get up VERY early in the morning.

Unfortunately we took one of first buses (the problem with travelling with a group) so there were already a bunch of people around. We did finish a 9 day trek (Choquequirau to Machi Picchu) the day before though, so there was also a slight inclination to actually sleep until after 4am. As it was we were up at about 5am to get ready and catch the bus to be there before sunrise.

Ironically (considering the town's name), when we arrived at our hotel in Aguas Calientes there was no hot water and I had to wait until after we went out for dinner, to wash off 9 days worth of grime.

Well done on a great shot of a brilliant place.

...and of course there are a few in my gallery and at my site: [link]

So if you ever go. To get to Machu Picchu, there is a bus that takes you up the mountain. It runs normal daytime hours. There is one very expensive hotel that is at the top of the mountain. Everything else is at the bottom in Agua Callientes. There is a trail that you can hike from the town to the top of the mountain. Started hiking really early in the morning about 4am in the dark to get the morning shots. It's worth it.

He must show up in thousands of photos a year, especially since I believe we have established that he is 'the' Wikillama... [link]

It's really beautiful. But to get there without all the tourists you have to get up before the sun rises and hike up the mountain since you need to get there before the buses start running. Then it's just you and the llamas. (And a handful of other early-bird photographers)

It could be. There are actually quite a few llamas roaming around Machu Picchu, but the one on Wiki does look a little familiar.

Yeah, it's got the same big spot on its back and tuft of dark hair on its head. What an odd coincidence!
